Short Bio
Eduardo Engel is Professor of Economics at the University of Chile and Director of Espacio Público, a Chilean think tank. He held a professorship at Yale University, where graduate students voted him Teacher of the Year on multiple occasions.
Engel is a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a Fellow of the International Economic Association. He served as President of the Latin American and Caribbean Economics Association (LACEA).
Engel has published extensively in macroeconomics, public finance, and infrastructure economics. He received the Frisch Medal from the Econometric Society.
Engel chaired a Presidential Anticorruption Commission in Chile in 2015. The legislative agenda that followed the commission’s report, resulted in the approval of major reforms of the campaign and political party’s finance regulations, conflict of interest and asset disclosure requirements, the civil service system, land use regulations, financial sector governance, and antitrust legislation.
Engel holds an engineering degree from the University of Chile, a Ph.D. in Statistics from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT.

Eduardo Engel es Profesor Titular de la Facultad de Economía y Negocios de la Universidad de Chile y director de Espacio Público, un think tank chileno. Fue Profesor Titular de Economía de la Universidad de Yale entre 2001 y 2013, donde los estudiantes graduados lo eligieron Profesor del Año en varias ocasiones.
Engel es Miembro Honorario Extranjero de la American Economic Association, Fellow de la Econometric Societ y de la International Economic Association. Fue Presidente de la Latin American and Caribbean Economics Association (LACEA).
Engel ha publicado extensamente en macroeconomía, finanzas públicas, economía de infraestructura y estadística aplicada. Recibió la Medalla Frisch de la Econometric Society en 2002.
Engel presidió el Consejo Asesor Presidencial Contra los Conflictos de Interés, el Tráfico de Influencias y la Corrupción en 2015. La agenda legislative que siguió al informe del consejo llevó a aprobar reformas mayores de las legislaciones que regulan el financiamiento de las campañas y de los partidos políticos, los conflictos de interés y las declaraciones de intereses y patrimonio, el Sistema de Alta Dirección Pública, regulaciones del uso de suelo, gobernanza del sector financiero y legislación antimonopolios.
Engel es ingeniero civil de la Universidad de Chile, Ph.D. en Estadística de la Universidad de Stanford y Ph.D. en Economía de MIT.
